My shop will be closed from 15th December until 26th December 2024. Wishing you all a peaceful and relaxing Christmas.
The Kindred collection is a family of pieces in stoneware clay. I like to reflect the inherent qualities of the clay itself, leaving it unglazed, and I form and decorate using the minimum of tools, so that the finished piece can reflect the material and the maker.
I use just my hands to shape each piece from a flattened sheet of clay, then apply slip (liquid clay) decorative designs with a natural sponge. The motifs are influenced by textile designs and artwork from the early 20th century, while the forms have echoes of Cycladic and Minoan votive pottery.
There are recurring shapes, motifs and colours in my work, but each piece is entirely unique in its form and decoration. The work is fired to 1185 degrees Celsius in an electric kiln over a period of 12 hours. Pieces bear my maker’s mark of a swallow impressed into the base.

A piece of abstract ceramic art to add an unusual highlight to your home, or as a thoughtful gift for housewarming, birthday or anniversary. Handmade from dark grey stoneware clay sourced from Germany, the form is broad shouldered and semi-figurative, with echoes of archaeological finds from ancient times.
After making the form, I decorated the front and back with panels of off-white and blue mingling together, and then used the sgraffito technique to score through the colour to reveal the clay beneath, creating two intertwined lines. To finish, in the final firing I added some dots of shiny glaze to contrast with the matt finish of the natural clay. The front and back of the piece have different designs. The result is a one-off unique piece of art which can also be used as a focal point for mindfulness/yoga meditation. The form, called Sami, is 14 cms high and approx. 10.5cms across the shoulderline. Underneath is my signature mark of a swallow in flight.
