The vase, from my Grafica Collection is the result of my love for an abstract painting called Nearing Circles by William Scott. The original painting hung in the office of Alastair Morton, the leading light of Edinburgh Weavers and he worked with the artist Scott to translate the design into a textile. I believe it formed part of an exhibition ‘Painting into Textiles’ in 1955. It’s typical of the Mid-Century Modern approach which is a real buzz in today’s interiors! So now the creative journey has gone from paintings to textiles to ceramics…

Full description

Hand made from black stoneware clay with lemon, white and grey decorative motifs, Ziggy is a slim jim of a vase – 19.5cms high with a quirky slight off centre form, and an oval shaped base approx. 4cms diameter. I created the motifs with a theme of abstract shapes and stripes with a main lemon and black panel, then white and grey irregular vertical strips around the rest of the piece. This means that you can turn around the piece and get an entirely different look. I glaze the interior, but leave the outside as the natural matt black clay, which contrasts with the pastel colours of the slip. I made a few similar pieces, each with a different pattern and in different sizes so that they also work as a group with or without flowers.
