The design reflects my interest in early to mid 20th century abstract art and textiles and I like to continue the design from the inside to the outside surface. I leave the fired clay unglazed to show the natural grainy finish of the black stoneware and slip decorative effect.

Full description
I used black stoneware clay to hand-form this decorative oval ceramic tray with small handles. It's a lovely gift for a birthday, housewarming, or just to say thankyou to someone special. The tray is an art inspired piece that could hold your keys in the hall, or your jewellery and trinkets in the bedroom, or just to provide a stylish focal point as a piece of ceramic creativity. After shaping the form while the clay is still soft, I decorated the clay surface with an abstract design of stripes and panels of lemon yellow, grey and green. To add extra interest I used the sgraffito technique to incise a pattern of simple curves on some of the areas of yellow.
After drying slowly I fired the piece in my electric kiln to 1185 degrees C. The surfaces are unglazed to show off the natural black clay and coloured slip decoration. Designed for display purposes only, not for food or cooking purposes.
Size: 24cms x 14cms x 4.5 cms approximately.
