After completing a couple of paintings of birds, I wanted to do another landscape and I decided that the detail in the rock of the main standing stone would be a good challenge to try to depict. There are about nine colours in that stone, all based on a warm brown undertone to go with the sunset sky. There are plenty of other colours in this painting as well, which gave me a chance to try out colour combinations that I don't use very often, such as the various shades of red and purple.

Full description
This painting is based on a photograph of the Ring of Brodgar on the Orkney Islands off the north-east of Scotland. It was created using pastel pencils on Clairefontaine Pastelmat paper and measures 29 x 21 cm, or about A4 size, without a mount.
The title of the piece is from a line in a song by Clannad, although that refers to a different ancient monument.
