I was drawn to this photo by that sense of exploration I get when I'm out walking. I often look for quiet paths and tracks just for the freedom of seeing where they go and that's the feeling I got from the thought of following this country lane into the sunrise at dawn. There was also the challenge of trying to represent the various greens with the limited range of shades in the set of pastel pencils I was using, so there were some subtle browns and yellows mixed in. That also helped to unify the image as a whole, with the yellow in the sky and the brown in the trees and fences.

Full description
This painting was based on a photograph of a lane in the North Yorkshire moors, taken in the early morning the day after some rainfall. It was created on quality pastel paper using soft pastel sticks and pastel pencils. The painting measures 24 x 34 cm in portrait format and is signed on the road near the bottom.
Unlike some of my other recent listings, this painting had a quick turnaround and was completed over about two weeks in April, in sessions fitted around working at my main job. It was also a chance to try out some new soft pastels that I had been given last Christmas (that seems to be becoming a theme for me - I can't think why!).
