About this item
"In the Beginning..." is the opening phrase of the Bible quotation from the Book of Genesis that was read out by the crew of Apollo 8 as they flew around the Moon at Christmas in 1968. This painting is based on the famous photo "Earth Rise" taken by astronaut Bill Anders on that mission. His photograph served to bring home the fragility of our home planet and gave the conservation movement a significant boost. On a personal level, the flight of Apollo 8 was the one that kick-started my brother's career as a space flight historian, so this painting is "In the Beginning..." in another sense. My brother has the original of this painting and it is now available only as a Giclee Print. The Copyright © of this artwork remains with artist Mike Shayler of mikeshaylerpastels. This artwork may not be reproduced, either in whole or in part, without the prior written permission of the artist. All rights reserved. As with all my artwork, postage is free to UK addresses. I do not currently ship overseas.

The inspiration for this original painting was easy. It was a suitable way to commemorate my brother's writing career and celebrate his birthday with a painting of where it all began.
