Labradorite is named so due to the first discovery of it in Labrador in Canada on the Island of St Paul, where it was once called ‘Fire Stone’ by the Inuits and associated with the magic and mysticism of the Northern Lights. It has a triclinic crystal system which means it has a 3 dimensional geometrical arrangement, in other words, an asymmetrical arrangement which throws the reflected light back on rotation, as does Amazonite, Aventurine, Kyanite, Rhodonite, Turquoise, Moonstone and Sunstone.
Serpentine is named such due to the surface resemblance to snake skin and is thought to have protective and magical properties. It comes in a variety of colours but the pale green variety is the most popular amongst jewellery makers. It is also used as a carving material and is often used as an alternative to Jade. It can also be called other names e.g. false Jade, Teton Jade and Koren Jade.
