I spent many years wandering in the Howgill Fells above the town of Sedbergh with my paints and I liked to create paintings while sitting on the ground immersed in the scenery, which feels much more inspiring than staying indoors working from a photograph.
On this wintry day it was really a bit too cold to paint so I had to work quickly. I had been trying to keep going, painting outdoors every day, and I can see from the pencil number on the canvas that this was day 43 in a series of consecutive days painting outside.
