Rockery Garden Wall Quilt (C)

Rockery Garden Wall Quilt (C)
Love this

Rockeries are very popular in gardens, I think because they imitate the way that flowers grow in nature – providing flashes of colour among the stones. In this version of my Rockery Garden I've 'fussy-cut' some of the flower and leaf motifs from printed batiks, and used marbled and shaded fabrics for the others.

The blossoms are in shades of turquoise, purple, mauve and pink, with a few flashes of golden yellow which provide a real 'pop' of colour. The curved paving stones cut from various grey marbled, mottled and batik and fabrics.

For the background I picked a softly-shaded batik fabric in the flower and leaf colours. I bonded the shapes onto the background, then quilted by machine across the whole design in long, sinuous lines, using a fine polyester thread.

Once all the quilting was done I cut across the corners of the quilt to create an elongated octagon. The quilt is backed in plain white, and the edges are bound in a multicoloured batik in shades of pink, blue and purple, caught down with a decorative wavy machine stitch in variegated thread.

A hidden casing at the top back will hold your own batten/hanging pole.

The quilt will be sent to you cushioned with reusable bubble-wrap, and packed into a large recyclable jiffy bag. Hanging pole and fixings are not included.

Size: 38 x 13in (c97 x 34cm)

Flowers and plants are amazingly persistent, and sometimes bloom from rocks and walls where it's hard for us to see any sources of nutrition! It's said that one particular little flower, aptly called London Pride (a member of the saxifrage family) rapidly colonised the bomb sites caused by the Blitz, and became a symbol of the Londoners' resilience. Noel Coward even wrote a song which referred to it – and I made a quilt called London Pride for my book 'Glimpses of Britain'.

This is part of my Rockery Garden collection, and you'll find loads more designs featuring flowers in the Enchanted Garden, Garland and Garden Path collections, as well as dotted around in my main shop.
