Folded fabric flowers are a Japanese speciality – the textile equivalent of origami! They often form part of kanzashi, elaborate decorations used in traditional Japanese hairstyles. These days kanzashi are most often worn on formal occasions such as weddings, and they are still part of the traditional dress of geisha. Kanzashi flowers are often made in silk; the fine fabric can be elaborately gathered and folded, and also has a beautiful sheen.

So, it seemed a lovely – and appropriate – idea to decorate my Japanese scenes with folded fabric flowers. I experimented with lots of possibilities to create my own designs – though I suspect that other people have come up with similar ones over the centuries …!

Full description

A pair of gorgeous small quilted wall hangings, inspired by the landscape of Japan.

In the first panel the country’s most famous landmark, Mount Fuji, rises behind a traditional shrine. In the second panel a traditional Japanese boat nudges through waterlilies and hanging fronds of blossoms in a formal water garden.

The panels are created in stained glass patchwork using pale cream bias binding, and each panel is decorated with a different style of folded fabric flowers. Lots of the fabrics have a slight metallic overprinting, which gives them an exotic sheen.

Lines of machine quilting create clouds in the sky, and ripples in the water, and texture on the mountain, the boat, and the waterlily pads. Gleaming beads catch the light on the water, and also create decorative centres for the flowers.

The corner of each design is angled at 45 degrees to create a long octagonal shape, and then set into a print border which echoes the same shape; I've then backed and bound the edges of each panel with a complementary fabric.

A hidden casing at the top back of each quilt will hold your own batten/hanging pole; you could hang the two designs together for extra impact.

The quilts will be sent to you cushioned with reusable bubble-wrap, and packed into a large recyclable jiffy bag. Hanging pole and fixings are not included. Note that these panels are being sold as a pair, so the price buys you both.

Each panel measures c21 x 16in (53 x 42cm)
