When I was creating a series of quilts inspired by birds, I knew straight away that I wanted to include flamingoes – there's something so wonderful about their stylised shapes, and the extraordinary sinuous ways in which they can move their necks …
Their name comes from the Spanish or Portuguese word flamengo, meaning 'flame-coloured'; in the wild this colour comes from a high consumption of shrimps and prawns, which contain beta-carotene. When we saw some flamingoes in a wildlife park in the UK, the keeper told us that they're fed carrots instead to maintain their pink colour; if I was a flamingo I'd be pretty narked by that substitution!
