At university I had to take one paper outside my own faculty (English Literature, believe it or not …), and I chose Italian Renaissance Art. As a result of this course I got to know the work of Luca Della Robbia, and I particularly liked his glazed terracotta roundels; what I particularly liked were the garlands of brightly-coloured flowers, fruit and leaves which he used to frame the white sculptures in the centre.
This design is very much inspired by these garlands, and I've used one of my favourite techniques – what I call scribble-stitching, or doodling by machine – to give the individual patches a subtle stained-glass effect.
