Hello. You have caught my shop in holiday mode, but If you would like to catch me in a real bricks and mortar one, then head to no 36, Gillygate, York, where I am part of a Pop up space until June 24th. I am with 6 other artists from York, and thanks to Blank Canvas and York Conservation trust, we have the use of a beautiful shop for a few weeks. I will be restocking my Folksy shop again as soon as possible after June 24th. I hope you can visit again then.
This Japanese fabric was once part of a vintage kimono, probably from the 1960’s. It has a sweet geometric pattern, mixed with tiny flower heads and a textured weave. Its delicate nature makes it perfect as an evening bag, or to take to a very special occasion.
I have backed the fabric onto canvas to strengthen it, but it is still a very soft little bag. I have lined it with a gold polyester satin.
There is a pair of shoulder straps 2 cm wide by 68 cm long, giving a nice shoulder bag length. There is a tuck at each end to create a base 3 cm wide, so altho this is a snug little bag, it will hold a surprising amount! It shuts with a chunky plastic zip measuring 26 cm. It measures 31 cm across its widest point, narrowing to 26 cm, whilst the length is 20 cm. Inside is a practical little pocket measuring 15 x 15 cm, and it is finished off with my own embroidered name tag.
You will find signs of this lovely fabrics previous life with some tiny rust marks and ageing, but I think they add to its previous history, as the garment of a young Japanese woman. It would make a lovely bag to carry to a summer wedding, or as a present for anyone who loves antique fabrics or Japan!
I like to recycle where I can. Your bag will be posted out wrapped in clean, recycled paper from my hoard of old books and papers. It will be sent as Royal Mail 2nd class signed for which takes 3 days, and will need a signature on arrival.
This old kimono was brought back from Japan to York for me as a present from my sister. Under strict instructions that it was not valuable, was damaged and was called old fashioned by the man who sold it to her, I promised to use it for making, and not put it in my too beautiful to use linen cupboard. I washed it very gently, then began to take it apart.
It was sewn together by hand, with very simple running stitches, which I was able to draw out in long lengths of thread. The old silk lining was rotten and
stained, but a new piece had been tacked on the bottom to renew its life. I was able to use that fabulous rust fabric to line one of the other bags in this collection which is also in my shop right now.
