Phheeww, my pop-up shop stint in York is over! So, thanks to everyone who visited me there, and thank you for visiting my Folksy shop here. I will be putting new things onto my shelves as soon as possible after June 25th, so keep an eye on this space!
This Japanese fabric was once part of a vintage kimono, probably from the 1960’s. It has a sweet geometric pattern, mixed with tiny flower heads and a textured weave. Its delicate nature makes it perfect as an evening bag, or to take to a very special occasion.
I have backed the fabric onto canvas to strengthen it, but it is still a very soft little bag. It has a fold over flap which closes with a gold magnetic clasp and I have used part of the lining of the original kimono for the inside.
The shoulder strap is 2 cm wide, and 58 cm long, so it can be used as a shoulder bag or hand held. There is a 2 cm wide panel to give it a little bit of depth, so it will hold a surprising amount! It measures 25 cm across its widest point, narrowing to 22 cm and is 15 cm long. Inside is a practical little pocket measuring 10 x 12 cm and it is finished off with my own embroidered name tag.
You will find signs of this lovely fabrics previous life with some tiny rust marks and ageing, but I think they add to its previous history, as the garment of a young Japanese woman. It would make a lovely bag to carry to a summer wedding, or as a present for anyone who loves antique fabrics or Japan!
I like to recycle where I can. Your bag will be posted out wrapped in clean, recycled paper from my hoard of old books and papers. It will be sent as Royal Mail 2nd class signed for, and will need a signature on arrival.
This old kimono was brought back from Japan to York as a present for me from my sister. Under strict instructions that it was not valuable, was damaged and was called old fashioned and worthless by the man who sold it to her, I promised to use it for making, and not put it in my too beautiful to use linen cupboard.
I washed it very gently, then began to take it apart. It was sewn together by hand, with very simple running stitches, which I was able to draw out in long lengths of thread. The old silk lining was rotten and stained, but a new piece had been tacked on the bottom to renew its life. I was able to use that fabulous rust fabric to line this bag.
The first bag I made was as a surprise for my sisters birthday in May, and this is the second one, and I plan to make a collection of pieces in the next week or so.
