I've been collecting limpet shells occasionally as they look so lovely when they've been tumbled around a bit and polished by the sea, the living shells are really rather dull, with a dark crusty surface. The shells need to be fairly extensively polished so that they look as good dry as the do when I pick them up wet.
I made a 'locket' style pendant ages ago, someone gave me a lovely old shell and I made my usual pendant from it, then it occurred to me there was a space inside, so I cut a 'door' in the backing and fastened it with a loop and tiny button. I spent ages trying to find a better way to create a locket back and then I found these lovely locket frames on a Canadian website, eureka.

Unusual locket made using a polished limpet shell with a mount of vintage and modern beads. The shell has subtle bands of a soft yellowy cream, with a hint of silvery grey at the centre. These colours are complemented by the beads of the mount. The beading is very simple and finished with strands of tiny golden brown beads with little freshwater pearls at their ends; most of these pearls are recycled from an old necklace, except for the two smoother white ones and the single silver grey one at the centre. The locket is created by inserting a copper locket frame into the leather backing of the pendant, creating a space for keepsakes or pictures. Suspended by a six loops of beads from a hand made, sterling silver, wire torc. Quite classic in appearance but quirky and unusual in it's materials and the 'secret' compartment
If the copper locket worries you, it is covered with fine leather so no copper should touch the skin.
