The House Sparrows are an endearing, friendly garden bird with an almost all year round presence, sadly suffering a long term decline but recently held the top spot in Scotland in the most recent RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch.
Helped by individuals and organizations such as 'The Glasgow House Sparrow Project'

For 10,000 years, Sparrows and House Sparrows have been with us, for as far back as the Egyptian period and mentioned in Celtic Folklore.
Sparrows were characters included in Beatrix Potters first short story about Peter Rabbit ,and have various meanings in different cultures and religions eg symbolic of a bond between two people.

This House Sparrow pair, show the light grey plumage in the chest area of the female and the black bib of the male which is not the case for other Sparrow species.
These ceramic birds are frost proof, so safe to be placed in an outdoors garden pot or straight into the ground, but equally at home adding interest to an indoor House plant.

Full description

Hand modelled, this pair of House Sparrows start off as solid balls of clay, textured and shaped to create wings and other fine details such as eyes, beak and individual feathers.

When leather hard, a light coloured slip is then brushed on to the form, creating a slight texture of feathers, starting to define the head, wings and chest area before a first kiln firing.

The House Sparows are now much harder and can have layers of metallic oxides and coloured underglazes, applied to the body before recieving a second kiln firing to a high frost proof temperature. The birds now has a smooth glossy finish to touch.

This pair of House Sparrows are now fixed onto wooden dowel rods that have been coated in linseed oil stained with umber coloured oil paint for waterproofing and a slight aged look to the wood and are suitable for outdoors and indoors.

Both male and female measure approx 7 cm in length, 5 cm at the highest point and approx 3.5 cm at widest point.

Overall height of both Sparrows inclusive of wooden dowel is 33 cm, which can be shortened if required.
