The colours shown in each picture may not be exactly as they appear in the artwork due to differences in the display modes of individual monitors and screens.
Apart from the chance to take a break from landscapes and try out some new materials, the main reason for doing this painting was simply that I hadn't done a bird portrait for quite a while. At least it gave me a chance to sharpen a few different pencils from my collection!

Full description
This pastel painting depicts a hoopoe about to enjoy its meal of a large grub while resting on a tree branch.
This is the second of my 'Bird on a Perch' series. I hadn't intended the gap between the two to be quite so long, but I seemed to spend quite some time doing landscapes in between. That was partly the reason for choosing to do this hoopoe, as it gave me the chance to use different colours to those you would normally expect in a landscape (apart from a sunset, maybe) and it was also a chance to combine the Faber Castell pastel pencils I'd been using with some soft pastel sticks and a paper called Clairefontaine Pastelmat that was new to me. I was so pleased with the paper that I tend to use it for most of my paintings now.
This painting measures 22 x 28 cm (or 30 x 36 including its light green double mount). As with my painting of a peregrine falcon, I decided to use an out-of-focus background to emphasise the detail in the bird and the tree branch.
