I welcome custom orders and commissions so if you have something you would like making, repurposing or restoring, get in touch and let’s talk about what we could achieve.

I saw the rusty old drill on sale at a local fair and immediately knew that it would make a great centrepiece for an industrial diorama style table lamp. With handles to turn and gears to change, it is fascinating and interactive too.

Full description

Centred around an antique bench clamping drill press, I built this lamp to recreate the atmospheric look of an early 20th century workshop. I chose the low powered LED bulb specifically for this effect. It is also very interactive; your guests will not be able to resist giving the handle a turn and watching the gears move.

I have removed what was left of the original, probably lead-based, paint (and the rust) and sprayed the castings in similar coloured modern metal paint to give a safe, durable finish. I left some of the parts bare metal as they would have been originally, these have either been greased or treated with beeswax to lubricate and preserve.

The lamp unit is a vintage caged inspection lamp head with a clear glass bowl. I cut it down and mounted it on an industrial conduit gooseneck post with a toggle switch built in. With the exception of the lampholder in the inspection lamp, which has been thoroughly cleaned and tested, all electrical parts are brand new. I have used offcuts of timber to make a sturdy French polished stand for the drill and lamp.
