A small decorative bowl, with a wavy undulating rim, mossy pale green/black striped outside, and a tenmoku satin green/brown over a swirled textured interior surface. I made it entirely by hand, pressing and shaping, then making a whirlpool like texture on the inside by sweeping my fingertips over the soft black clay surface. I added a little footring in plain black clay on the bottom, with an impressed seal of my potter’s mark – a swallow in flight. You could keep your earrings and rings in the bowl, display some pretty pebbles, or dried flower buds such as lavender to scent your rooms. The exterior finish is the natural matt black of the clay itself, with a dappled pastel green decoration, while the inside has toning dark greens and browns in a muted satin finish. Almost everyone has space for a little bowl like this! 9cms diameter, 5.5cms high. Human beings have been working with clay for millennia, enjoying the rhythmic action of simply using hands and simple wooden tools to produce bowls. That’s why I enjoy making by hand, without using a potter’s wheel – to re-establish that link with the very earliest potters. I use black stoneware clay, and like to leave the outside unglazed to show off that earth connection.
