Item details

A narrow necked bottle form in black stoneware ceramic to add an arty focal point to a window sill, shelf or tabletop. I shaped a cylindrical body from grainy black clay and added an asymmetric squared off neck then decorated with my own abstract designs of panels and stripes in shades of lemon, grey, green and yellow. The images show different parts of the design which extends around the shape. The form has been fired twice, with a final firing up to 1185 degrees C in my kiln. The outside is the natural matt finish of the clay and coloured slip, with the colour fired into the clay itself. Under the base you’ll find my potter’s mark of a swallow in flight. This bottle is approx. 18cm high x 6 cm at the widest part of the oval base. Because the interior is unglazed, the bottle is for decorative purposes only and will not hold liquids.

I’m influenced by the shapes of bottles discovered in archaeological sites, particularly from Minoan and other ancient Greek excavations. In my making, I like to give the forms a modern twist and decorate with contemporary designs influenced by the textiles of the 20th century and modern abstract art.
