I wanted to do something very different with this old mangle and came up with this idea for it, keeping everything about it vintage was a challenge but I think it works well.

Entertain friends and family in style with this stunning feature wine and drinks bar made from a cast iron mangle, wooden bottle crate and old floorboards for the shelves. The mangle is a TayWil brand (Taylor and Wilson of Accrington) from the 1940s or 50s. The integral wine rack is a vintage 6 bottle crate with wooden dividers fixed to the framework on its side. It had a few old furniture beetle exit holes so I have given it a double dose of reputable woodworm killer. All other shelving is made from floorboards salvaged from a 1930s house undergoing a renovation. The mangle has been completely dismantled, old paint removed and a coat of dark green quality metal paint applied to finish and protect. I have cut out the original rollers and modified the remaining parts so the handle still turns the gears – wonderfully steampunk! All wood has been lightly sanded preserving the patina and then given several coats of yacht varnish. I should note that young children should not be allowed unsupervised around it because the gears could trap little fingers – and, of course, it is a drinks bar!
