An elegant pale blue porcelain box with a bamboo handle and subtle colour variations reflecting the melting of the glaze on the lid top and in the stamped markings. The glaze is transparent where thin and pale blue where it has pooled in the fish stamps and the medallion outside. This hand-built box is perfect for jewellery, spices, condiments, herbs or your small precious items. The jar was made with a UK porcelain and, after biscuit firing and glazing the piece was fired to 1300C to make it impermeable and very durable.
- All of my work is one-of- a-kind and made by hand.
- The box measures approximately 11cm tall and 12cm wide.
- The bottoms is impressed with my seal, the letter P, and its identity number 9733.
I love making lidded boxes because I am told by returning customers that they often get used regularly. I want to engage with people by providing them with something thoughtfully handmade that fits into their daily routine. I take care to make a well-fitting lid to add to the pleasure of its use. The top of the lid is flat with a grid of indentations to retain a layer of glaze and there are dashes of brush-applied gloss-brown iron oxide to add an abstract visual interest. The box is mounted on four small square feet, two of which turn inwards, reminding me of corrective childhood shoe fittings. This box pays homage to my long-term interest in the graceful Chinese porcelains of the Song Dynasty and there are further oriental associations with the use of bamboo for the handle. It also evokes a therapeutic vision of fish swimming calmly against the flow of crystal-clear water.
