This pendant is sure to make a statement thanks to its large size, unusual irregular pentagonal shape and the fact that its a strikingly patterned piece of fordite bezel set in sterling silver. It has a stripy pattern in sparkly black, silver, red, blue and white and can be reversed to show a completely different stripy pattern this time in red, yellow, grey and black. So what is fordite - its layer on layer of car paint that built up on the rails in the old spray booths when car panels were still manually sprayed. After it had been through the curing ovens it became hard and had to be removed - these chunks became fordite and the beauty of the material was revealed when lapidrists got hold of it to cut and polish to show the different layers and colours. Fordite can be approximately aged based on the range of colours and number of sparkly layers it has, this material has lots of sparkles but a more limited range of colours suggesting it was formed in the late 90's (later material had fewer colours, earlier material more), it has come from one of the plants near Detroit hense its alternative name of Detroit agate.
The pendant is reversible but I needed to put a bracing bar across the back because of the shape - I lined it up with the stripes so that it doesn't show. The back also has a healed fault line, this doesn't affect its strength.
Measures 2 3/4 inches by 7/8 inches and comes with a 16 in silver chain in a gift box (could easily be swapped for a leather thong).
