Malachite is a beautiful, vivid green stone with concentric swirls of black.
The colour comes from the presence of copper.
Mined in Egypt as early as 4,000 BC, it was used both for ornamental purposes and ground to a powder to form paint and cosmetics.
In the middle ages, Malachite was worn to ward off evil and to protect travellers.
It was believed the stone could detect impending danger, and would break as a warning to the wearer.
Onyx is a form of Chalcedony, and Green Onyx is the trade name for Chalcedony that has been dyed a deep, rich, emerald-green colour.
It is widely used as an alternative to Emerald as a birthstone for May and Taurus.

Striking necklace featuring a 12x8mm Malachite tie shaped pendant set between 6mm beads of Green Onyx and Black Onyx, embellished with 3mm faceted Green Onyx beads highlighted with 2mm Black Onyx and 3mm copper spacers.
The necklace graduates to trios of 4mm Black and Green Onyx beads and fastens with a heart shaped copper toggle clasp.
The Malachite focal bead is a beautiful, vivid green with darker banding and hangs from a pure copper bail.
The faceted Onyx adds a subtle glint, while the copper adds warmth and shine.
Handmade in my home workshop here in beautiful Devon in the UK, this would make a gorgeous gift for a birthday, anniversary, best friend or as a treat for yourself.
This choker-style necklace measures approximately 16 inches (41cm), excluding the pendant - contact me via the button below my shop banner if you would like it longer or shorter.
Your necklace will be wrapped in tissue and presented in a pretty organza gift bag.
