Full description
A stunning hoop art picture featuring an appliqued wise owl on a cerise pink raw silk background, hand embellished with embroidered features and the words "have a hoot". A lovely gift for teachers or students celebrating the end of the school year (or even exams) or a cute picture for a child's bedroom or nursery.
Zero waste - I set myself a challenge of making this entirely from offcuts and salvaged materials. The background silk is from bridemaids dresses made in the 1990s by my mother in law, the owl motif is cut from quilting cotton scraps, and the ribbon is an end of reel originally bought for stage costumes. Even the embroidery thread is short pieces left over from other projects. Ok, the hoop and backing felt are new, but I chose wood and wool - both sustainable materials
The picture is mounted in a wooden hoop - using the gathered stitch technique not glue - and finished with a circle of 100% wool felt, carefully hand sewn using blanket stitch - so the back is as neat as the front.
A simple white ribbon loop allows the picture to be easily hung on a wall, or it can be propped on on a shelf or mini easel. Please display out of reach of young children.
Size - the hoop is 4 inches across, the hanging loop is another 3 inches.
Care - dust with a dry cloth or brush
