These vintage transfer papers from the 30s are so clever and versatile - allowing everyone to add beauty and charm to everyday textiles in their own unique way. I am using them to learn new stitches and techniques - both modern and traditional - and I hope to turn some into sewing kits so you can have a go yourself.

Wild Rose or Dog Rose - a stunning hand embroidered picture using traditional stitches, in pale tones of peach-pink and soft greens. Worked with just 2 strands of thread and a very fine needle, the effect is delicate and I think captures the beauty of one of our native flowers beautifully. A unique piece of textile art, Wild Rose would make a lovely gift for Mum, sister or a friend.... or just treat yourself.
Inspired by a vintage 1930s ink transfer motif - a simple outline shape that allowes me to interpret the flower using my own choice of embroidery stitches and techniques.
I chose a mix of flat and raised stitches to create contrast and texture. Long and short stitch paints the rose petals in subtle colours, and the edges and rosebud in padded satin stitch. A pop of golden yellow emphasises the bold stamens tipped with pollen that is typical of our wild roses. The leaves are stacked flystitch in a variagted thread, and the stems are backstitched and partly couched.
Entierly hand sewn in cotton embroidery threads on an Irish linen fabric background and mounted in a quality beechwood hoop frame (brand Elbesee). I used the traditional gathering and lacing method for extra secureness, backing the picture with a circle of wool felt neatly hand embroidered into place with blanket stitch.
Easily propped into a shelf, the hoop art also comes with a length of ribbon for hanging.
Size: 4 inches diameter
Care - dust with a dry cloth or brush
