These vintage transfer papers from the 30s are so clever and versatile - allowing everyone to add beauty and charm to everyday textiles in their own unique way. I am using them to learn new stitches and techniques - both modern and traditional - and I hope to turn some into sewing kits so you can have a go yourself.

Bird with flowers - a beautiful hand-embroidered sampler-style picture using traditional stitches with a modern twist for strong textural contrasts. A unique piece of art for your own home, or a gorgeous gift for mum or a favourite aunt.
A sample piece I created to try different techniques; this picture is hand-stitched by me in cotton embroidery threads on an Irish linen fabric background and mounted in a quality beechwood hoop frame.
The design is based on a 1930s ink transfer - simple line drawings intended for the embroiderer to interpret with their own choice of thread, colours and stitches. I combined three separate drawings to create a sampler piece that showcases different techniques, including thread painting and stumpwork (raised stitches).
For the bird, I used "long and short" stitch in blended colours to paint his head and body, and padded satin stitch to add depth to his wings. The red flowers include curved bullion knots with pistil stitches (elongated French knots), and the tassel flowers are a modern interpretation of turkey stitch.
I have tightly secured the fabric into the hoop (brand Elbesee) using traditional gathering and lacing. It is backed with a circle of wool felt, neatly hand-embroidered into place with blanket stitch.
Easily propped on a shelf, the hoop art also comes with a length of ribbon for hanging.
