This piece of wood came to me from a colleague in the Suffolk village of Boxford. When I first saw the rot through the middle I was tempted to discard it for firewood, but putting it in the lathe revealed something more beautiful than I has imagined. I have enough of the timber left for two more Holey bowls and am looking forward to seeing what the wood reveals.
The Yew is an incredibly long lived tree, not being considered ancient until over 900 years old - there are at least 500 churchyards in the UK with Yew trees older than the churches themselves.Often associated with themes of immortality, however they were sometimes also seen as omens of doom, often planted over the graves of plague victims in medieval times - perhaps in an attempt to cleanse the very ground of any taint?
This Yew tree had been growing in Boxford Rectory garden until damaged in a storm and felled for safety.

Full description
A Yew "Holey" bowl. Made from the main trunk of an old piece of Yew that has rotted in the middle leaving a hole all the way through the piece of wood.
A unique piece where the beauty of the wood is exposed, the differing growth stages can be seen and the natural processes of life and death are evident.
Approximately 150mm in dia and 95mm tall with an opening of 95mm. Sanded to 600 grit and treated with Danish oil, this bowl will make a wonderful talking point and you won't be able to resist picking it up to feel the life contained therein. Though the danish oil is food and toy safe I cannot stress highly enough that Yew is naturally toxic - whilst safe to handle it would not suit being chewed on by young teeth nor as a food dish (let alone stuff falling out the holes!)
