The Yew is an incredibly long lived tree, not being considered ancient until over 900 years old - there are at least 500 churchyards in the UK with Yew trees older than the churches themselves.Often associated with themes of immortality, however they were sometimes also seen as omens of doom, often planted over the graves of plague victims in medieval times - perhaps in an attempt to cleanse the very ground of any taint?
this Yew came from Boxford Rectory where it has been growing for many decades before coming down in a storm.

Full description
This is a piece of Yew turned into a large open vase or upright bowl. It will suit silk or crocheted flowers in some Oasis as water will unfortunately cause the wood to swell. Alternatively it could be used for Potpourri or simply kept as a piece to admire
Finished to 800 grit, treated with Danish Oil. It stands at 140mm tall and 130mm in dia at its widest. the opening is approximately 90mm and it is 90mm deep.
Turned early 2024 on my lathe at home, Turned on the end grain, the patterning reveals where the branches of this tree have grown and pushed against one another to eventually form a whole which gave sufficient diameter to turn this piece.
