The Yew is an incredibly long lived tree, not being considered ancient until over 900 years old - there are at least 500 churchyards in the UK with Yew trees older than the churches themselves.Often associated with themes of immortality, however they were sometimes also seen as omens of doom, often planted over the graves of plague victims in medieval times - perhaps in an attempt to cleanse the very ground of any taint? I don't know where this Yew tree grew - or its story. But this vase offers an opportunity to show off the beauty of this hardest of softwoods.

Full description
This is a piece of Yew turned into a small bud vase. It will suit silk or crocheted flowers as water will unfortunately cause the wood to swell.
Finished to 800 grit, sealed and lacquered. At 170mm tall and 70mm in dia at its widest, this piece might be small but it is beautiful. the opening in the top is approximately 8mm in diameter
This small piece of branch wood from a yew tree was given to me by another, more experienced woodturner and has been waiting for me to discover what's inside it. The shape is simple and elegant. Turned early 2024 on my lathe at home as part of a series of experiments with different vase shapes.
