This unique wood table lamp features a rare, vintage glass fishing float. The glass float has a light green tint, and is one of about 15 that I found half buried in the garden of Clairdale, our 300 year old crofters cottage on the island of Sanday, Orkney. Used by the Victorian crofters that once lived here, it carries all the chips, scuffs, scratches and patina that you would expect on a genuine vintage glass fishing float that has had a hard life at sea. The float carries the North Star symbol with "British Made" set around it, and is believed to have been manufactured between 1840 and 1910. The glass floats were tied into the tops of fishing nets to keep them hanging vertically in the water, with stone weights attached to the bottom as ballast.

Inspired by a lighthouse, the circular base supports a slender column with a smaller circular platform on top, formed from strips of laburnum and yew wood, then turned to shape on my lathe. It has a cork base to protect your table tops, and I've used a string of LED micro-lights to illuminate the glass from within, with a restful warm-white colour-cast. Powered by three AA batteries (not supplied), the battery box has multiple flashing modes, as well as steady on, and switches off automatically after 6 hours.
NOT designed for outdoor use. 180 mm wide, 340 mm high. Each of my lamps is a special, one-off design, and is truly unique - not another like it in the world. The price includes postage and packing.

Original British made glass fishing floats from the Victorian era are quite rare. Most surviving glass floats are made in Norway or Japan, very few British floats were made and fewer survive. It is possible to buy new floats, but those I have used in my lamps were found still in the original nets, which sadly crumbled away when handled. It's given me great pleasure to up-cycle these old floats into beautiful, one of a kind table lamps. Truly unique, there isn't another like it in the world.
