I've been fascinated by the intersection of textile crafts and mathematics for many years and hacking my knitting machine has given me the ideal way to express the beauty of the patterns that arise in this area. This piece uses a recent discovery in Conway's Game of Life to create a simple but striking fabric.

A pencil case featuring the New Agar pattern from Knot Unknot's Game of Life Fair Isle collection. When the pattern in this piece covers the plane in Conway's Game Of Life infinite infinitely then it is completely stable under the rules of the game. This is what the mathematicians studying the game call an Agar pattern. This one was an new discovery in February 2022.
This brown and blue grey pencil case has a sturdy zip, is fully lined and is deal for carrying writing and drawing tools, or knitting and sewing essentials. (Contents not supplied, obviously!) The outer fabric is pure Shetland-style wool from one of Scotland's oldest mills. The lining is polyester cotton and the zip is black with gold coloured metal. The dimesions of the case are approximately 28cm by 20.5cm by 6cm.
I knit the outer fabric in my studio in Edinburgh and the bags are constructed for me by a local social enterprise.
