The heat felt overwhelming in the flat pools of Donána, with the lack of tree cover and the vast expanse of shimmering water bouncing the sun glare onto us. The discomfort was periodically forgotten when the Greater Flamingos erupted into the air, turning the sky pink with their plumage and then returning back to the water.
We had arrived late morning and by the time we had got half way around our preplanned route the temperature had spiked, as we turned onto the new road, i knew we were spent and that it was time to admit defeat and return home. As we stopped and looked out onto the new pool of water ahead of us, a Purple Heron. Wings spread out and bill pointing towards the hot sun as if submitting to it. His sense of calm and acceptance seemed to embrace us and we submitted to the heat and once again into the splendour of Donana, we stayed.
' Be more Heron' is my mantra. cultivate happiness.
