“The Herd of Red Deer was commissioned by a client who had previously bought the Standing Red Deer Stag sculpture. I had always wanted to do a whole herd of deer, not just the stag, as in the families croft in Scotland the female deer would come down into the garden just before they were about to give birth, they were so beautiful and graceful.
I chose these poses for the mother and fawn because I love the moment where the fawn stands and takes its first staggering steps.
The Standing Red Deer Stag sculpture was modelled on a royal stag, and the inspiration drawn from a memory which had stuck in my head since seeing three males standing proudly on a mountain in the Highlands of Scotland.”
