Ruby is the modern birthstone for the month of July and the Zodiac sign of Cancer, but one alternative birthstone, used in Ancient Rome, is black Onyx.
The birthstone colour for July is red.
I have matched black Onyx beads with ruby coloured Swarovski crystal heart and bicones, and red Bamboo Coral.
I love the contrast between the sparkling red Swarovski crystal, the deep red Coral and polished and frosted Onyx.
Ruby is also the stone for the 40th wedding anniversary.
