Painting on canvas always makes me a bit experimental. I wanted to break down my composition elements, just concentrating on a single dahlia stem and trying to get those fantastic curled up petals. It is such a sculptural flower to paint. I was going through a bamboo phase at the time so I included stems of that too. It balances out and fills the length of the canvas on the left. The right corner seemed a bit empty so I had fun using all the tonal colours within the painting as notations in watery brush strokes. I liked the composition so I decided to make another featuring chrysanthemums this time. Because of it's colour, I wondered if this painting might make a unique golden wedding present.

Full description
An original dahlia watercolour painting on canvas comprising a yellow, white and grey dahlia in a central position with 3 stems of bamboo down the left hand side in brown and grey tones. Colour notes used in the composition are featured in abstract block formation in the bottom right corner of the canvas. This painting was created in my Norfolk studio and I have used gouache to give body and texture to the background which continues around the edge. The colours are soft and subtle to fit in easily with your colour scheme in any room. The painting measures 70cm x 50cm x 4cm and is ready to hang. I have called this piece Dahlia and Bamboo I.
