Item details

I love the shapes of the historic bottle ovens in Stoke-on-Trent, the major hub of the UK pottery industry during the 19th and 20th centuries. These ovens were phased out when the Clean Air Act was brought in, and most were demolished, but over 40 still remain around the city, and I find them a fascinating subject for my work as each is a slightly different shape, and in different states of repair and surroundings. Minkstone bottle oven used to be within a building with it's top sticking out (see my "Heron Cross" print for what a 'range' looks like), however it is now out in the open and waiting to be restored. I wanted to make the bottle oven stand out and glow under the scaffolding. Unusually for this series, I made a fourth layer to give more shadow at the top.
