I love the shapes of the historic bottle ovens in Stoke-on-Trent, the major hub of the UK pottery industry during the 19th and 20th centuries. These ovens were phased out when the Clean Air Act was brought in, and most were demolished, but over 40 still remain around the city, and I find them a fascinating subject for my work as each is a slightly different shape, and in different states of repair and surroundings. This joined pair of kilns used to be part of a massive row that stood along the canal as part of the Twyfords works. They have been restored and now stand as a monument, surrounded by a new housing development.

A three-stage reduction linocut of the two remaining Twyfords bottle ovens in Cliffe Vale, Stoke-on-Trent. It is on white Zerkall paper, and using Cranfield water-based relief ink. The image is 10cm x 15cm, (roughly A6) and the paper is 18cm x 26cm. Each print is hand-inked and hand-printed, so each is slightly different giving them each a unique quality. As this is a reduction print, the lino plate is gradually cut away during the process so that no more prints can be made.
