Full description

This eye catching pendant features tuxedo agate and Detroit agate (aka fordite) to give a monochromatic colour scheme. Both cabochons are bezel set in sterling silver with a point of articulation between the two parts and the bail hidden behind the upper tuxedo agate section. Tuxedo agate as the name suggests is black with white stripes whilst the fordite has whorls of black, white and silver with just a little cherry red, some of the bands are sparkly. The pendant is large but not heavy.

So what is fordite? It is layers of cured car paint that built up in the old spray booths before the more efficient electrospray technique was introduced. Since it was baked in the curing ovens in between each coat it becomes rock hard allowing it to be cut and polished to show off the various layers, its this banding that gives it the alternative name of Detroit agate. I cut and polish this material myself and you can see the rough in the second photo - its not included in the sale but if you would like matching items making then drop me a message. There has been suggestion that this material came from the Orion Assembly plant in Detroit but because of the limited colour palette I've not been able to match it to a specific car make or year.

Measures 7 1/2 cm by 2cm (just under 3 in drop) and comes complete with chain and gift box.
