This piece was inspired by traditional folk figures and coastal working life. I’m interested in how simple forms, posture and colour can suggest character and history without overt detail, allowing the viewer to bring their own story to the figure.

Full description
This hand carved wooden fisherman sculpture is a one-of-a-kind folk art figure, carved slowly by hand from solid basswood and hand painted using artist acrylic paints.
The figure is carved in the round, with visible facets left intentionally to show the marks of the making process.
His oilskin coat and hood are suggested through strong, simplified shapes rather than fine detail, giving the piece a grounded, weathered presence.
Standing 9 cm tall on a solid wooden block base, the fisherman feels steady and self-contained — a quiet character rather than a narrative scene.
The limited colour palette and slightly stooped posture suggest endurance and stillness, echoing traditional folk figures and coastal working life.
The painted surface allows the carved form beneath to remain visible, and the underside of the base is finished with my maker’s mark.
