I’m drawn to seagulls as everyday coastal characters — familiar, watchful and often overlooked. I wanted to capture the quiet side of a seagull rather than the noisy stereotype, focusing on its shape, stance and presence.
The small scale of the carving encourages you to slow down and really look, much like noticing a bird perched on a wall or rooftop during a walk.
Using simple forms and a limited palette allowed the character of the bird to come through without unnecessary detail.
This piece was inspired by time spent walking near the coast and paying attention to those ordinary moments that stay with you.

Full description
This mini hand carved seagull sculpture is a small, one-of-a-kind artwork, carved slowly by hand from solid basswood and hand painted using artist acrylic paints.
I carve each piece in the round, allowing the natural grain and resistance of the wood to guide the final shape. The faceted surfaces are left visible, giving the seagull a gentle, sculptural presence and celebrating the marks of the carving process rather than hiding them.
The seagull is perched on a tall carved wooden base, giving it height and a sense of quiet watchfulness.
Painted in a limited palette, the bird contrasts with the darker natural wood below, drawing attention to both material and form. Turned in the light, the sculpture reveals slightly different expressions from every angle.
This piece measures 9 cm tall and is designed to stand freely on a shelf, mantelpiece or small table. Its small scale makes it ideal for a curated space — a place where you notice it gradually rather than all at once.
Each sculpture is entirely unique and finished with my maker’s mark on the underside. This is an original artwork, not a reproduction.
Carved and painted by me in my home studio, with care, patience and a love of quiet, handmade objects.
