I see this as my typographic ode to the Chemistry of the Universe.
The periodic table holds deep fascination for many scientists as it is one of the keys to unlocking the fundamental patterns of the material world. Everything on earth is made of these 94 elements (though some are vastly more common than others). There are a number of things that are unsatisfying graphically and conceptually about the usual table familiar from GCSE Chemistry and I became a bit obsessed with seeing if I could improve upon it to make something elegant and beautiful using the 'elements' of letterpress type available in the studio. Many other designer-scientists have tried different periodic arrangements and I have drawn on some of their work, but I believe my version is unique.
This took a long time to set up and print which is why it's more expensive that most of my other prints.

9-colour letterpress print of the Periodic Table as a spiral of Atomic Numbers.
This is a limited edition of 21 hand-made A3 posters that will appeal to people who enjoy the overlap between science and art and are fascinated by the mathematical patterns in the physics and chemistry of the universe.
My unique version of the periodic table shows the 94 elements that occur naturally on earth as a clockwise spiral of atomic numbers. This arrangement emphasises the elements’ numerical patterns and also mimics the atomic model of concentric circular electron shells which ‘fill up’ with electrons as elements increase in mass. I hope that science-lovers contemplate these patterns afresh and enjoy solving the logic of some of my typographic decisions.
It was printed on an Albion Press from 1863 using metal and wood type and hand-inked between each impression using 9 colours of ink on acid-free 220gsm Seawhite Cartridge paper.
GRADE B versions of this print have printed slightly unevenly. These selected prints are good enough to display, and some may even prefer the character of the uneven ink!
