Full description
Enclosed in a pale beech embroidery hoop, this little snowy scene is a true labour of love. A winter fir tree with it's boughs laden with snow, rising from a drift of tiny white stitches. Wonderfully tactile — layers of thread and clusters of French knots create a beautifully raised texture that gives the whole piece a gentle, almost sculpted, 3-D feel.
I stitched this piece on a train journey to London, letting the tree grow organically with no drawing or plan — just a design evolving moment by moment. The result is completely one-of-a-kind, a perfect treasure for your home or a gift for someone who adores handmade art.
The trunk and branches are built up with stem stitch, with long-and-short shading adding depth to the bark. The pine needles, worked in tones of green, are straight stitches and tiny detached-chain loops, with hundreds of French knots in snowy white ome sprinkled lightly across the top boughs, others gathered in thick, snowy clusters on the lower branches and the ground below.
Entierly hand sewn in cotton embroidery threads on an Irish linen fabric background and mounted in a quality Elbesee hoop frame. I used the traditional gathering and lacing method for extra secureness, backing the picture with a circle of wool felt neatly hand embroidered into place with blanket stitch.
Easily propped into a shelf, the hoop art also comes with a length of ribbon for hanging.
