These large drop earrings have retro appeal as they are made with vintage boatite which has been bezel set in sterling silver and finished with simple silver hooks.The earrings measure a sizeable 62mm drop (inc hook) by 18mm across. Boatite is a build up of cured paint from boat yards, in this case the Larson boat yard and this material is believed to be from the 1960's hence the retro colour palette of cream and green. These earrings were cut from the top of the block of rough boatite and still have some dimples of the original crust rather than a completely smooth surface. Boatite is the name given to the cured build up of paint that forms in boat yards (I like to think of it as fordite's maritime cousin). Normally this build up would be thrown away but occasionally lumps of it would be kept as a curio and people are now realising the beauty of this waste material and turning it into jewellery.
