Shell Pearl
Shell pearls are imitation pearls first conceptualised by the Venetians in the 13th century by using substitute materials such as alabaster. Today, modern shell pearls are high quality replicas of pearls and are made from Mother of Pearl ground down, shaped, dyed and surrounded by a protective lustrous coating. They are hard wearing, durable, resistant to oil, stains, sweat, and are an ecologically sound choice.
Garnet
Garnets are named after the Latin word ‘Granatus’ meaning “seeds”. This is thought to be because garnet clusters look like pomegranate seeds. Garnets have more than 20 varieties in almost every colour of the rainbow and have been used as gemstones since the bronze age. Red colours are the most common, with blue garnets being the rarest. They are high on the Mohs scale at 6-7.5 which makes them extremely hard wearing with the potential to last thousands of years with the correct care.

Details
This is a classic, stylish white shell pearl and red wine colour garnet necklace and earrings set, a ‘must add’ to your essential jewellery wardrobe. The necklace is strung with 32 classic round white 12mm lustrous shell pearls and alternately with 31 round red garnet 3mm beads. The profile of the pearls are nicely accentuated by colour and size separation and the piece hangs approximately 6cm down from the throat. It is easy to put on and take off with the oval toggle clasp and bar and is safely secure when the bar is inserted into the toggle.
The matching earrings have a 2.5cm drop from the earring base wire end loop and are each made up from 1 single 12mm white shell pearl topped and tailed with 3mm round garnet beads, complete with clear ribbed silicone earring wire backstops. The whole necklace and earrings set feels substantial and is nicely weighted, having a pleasing sway and movement.
