History
Hematite was used as far back as 164,000 years ago (and probably before) when its powder was used as a pigment to draw and make marks on stone and cave walls. It has a high iron content and powerful red hue which was utilised by the ancient Egyptians for cosmetic use for lipstick and face rouge. The ancient Romans and Amerindians also revered it for its protective properties and used it to fashion talismans and amulets, together with the ancient Babylonians who carried it with them for strength and courage.
Hematite is a highly magnetic stone as it is iron based and considered by many to be a metaphysical stone used commonly for meditation and divination. It is said to protect the wearer from negative energy, enhance mental clarity and aid physical recuperation. It is said to be associated with Mars and astrological qualities of courage bravery, leadership, assertiveness, determination and perseverance.
