These classic drop earrings are given a modern twist by featuring Californian surfite bezel set in sterling silver finished with simple silver hooks. The drops of surfite are a well matched pair with vertical wavey stripes in maroon and blue, most of the bands are opaque but a few are translucent. The open backed settings allow light to pass through the surfite so it looks subtly different depending on the lighting. The earrings measure approx 47mm top of hook to bottom and 15mm across. Comes gift boxed.
So what's surfite? It is many upon layer of cured resin that builds up during the 'glassing' step of custom surfboard manufacture (glassing is when the foam inner is covered in more durable resin). This build up is normally considered a waste material and thrown away but jewellers have started using it as a colourful and sustainable alternative to natural gems so these earrings would make a great gift for the surfer in your life or for someone keen on eco alternatives. I cut and polish the surfite myself and this particular batch of surfite came from a workshop in California (I don't know which one though). I have plenty of surfite from several workshops so if you love the idea of surfite but want something else drop me a message.
