The Ceasg, is a mermaid in Scottish Folklore, half woman, half grisle ( the tail of a young salmon), or in Scottish Gaelic, maighdean mhara ( "maid of the sea" ).
In Folklore, said not only to live in the sea, but also in rivers and streams.
The inspiration for this unique piece came through a combination of my love for nature, coastline, landscape, and a fascination since a child with mermaids and other ancient folklore tales.
The jug form symbolizes the sea, and the richly decorated glossy surface and deep varying tones of blue create the feeling of under water.

The main body of this ceramic deorative jug has been hand made, using the technique of coiling with wet and pliable stoneware clay.
After carefully refining the main shape, the handle and all the elements of the underwater low relief scene has been built up using a mixture of thin flat sheets of clay, hand modelling and a variety of texture made from thin extruded clay pieces, stamping and scribing into the wet clay surface.
As the clay begins to dry, turqouise decorating slip has been applied to add depth to the final glazed surface.
After carefull drying and a first kiln firing, the whole piece recieves layers of copper and cobalt oxide to create a varying sea like blue, highlighted with small areas of coloured underglazes before pouring over a clear glaze that will result in a richly and detailed smooth shiny surface to the touch.
Although the jug shape is symbolic of the water in the sea. Itis fully sealed and can hold water for cut flowers.
Height of approx 19cm
Width of 20cm inclusive of the handle
Base approx 13cm
