On most days, I walk my rough collie along the beautiful and remote lanes near where we live in the West Wales countryside, the last leg of our journey letting her go offlead through virtually untouched woodland.
One day, as I was walking the lanes and passed a gate into a pasture, I spotted a fox cub just a few meters away. I stopped and watched him. He was sitting on a hedge bank, surveying the scene, oblivious to my presence. He played a little, then looked up into my eyes, stared for a moment, and surprised, he ran off into the hedge out of sight.
The image lingered in my mind, and daily immersed in the images of beautiful countryside, banks full of spring and summer wild flowers and woodland creatures, I decided to incorporate the fox cub into a slate painting overflowing with the richness of Wales' wildlife.
