Northumberland is rich in castles - some have been family homes for hundreds of years, whilst others have fallen into ruin - a testament to this border county's violent past. I wanted to showcase some of these buildings and have chosen five of the most northerly castles to draw and watercolour for this seamless repeat design: Etal, Chillingham, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and Alnwick. They're all a stone's throw from where I live at Berwick-upon-Tweed on the border and I've enjoyed many a fun family day out, picnic-ing in the ruins or seeing behind the imposing facades to the grandeur beyond.
